This week represents a campus-wide initiative to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and promote a culture of respect and integrity.

“Hazing undermines the values of leadership, accountability, and belonging that define Georgia Tech,” said Ron Mazique, director of OSI.  “Our goal is to ensure every Yellow Jacket has a safe and supportive experience in any student organization, team, or community.”

OSI, a department within Student Engagement and Well-Being, has developed this year’s programs through a campus-wide collaboration with Fraternity and Sorority Life, Georgia Tech Athletics, the John Lewis Student Leadership Pathways Program, Campus Recreation, and DramaTech. Other key partners include the Center for Mental Health Care & Resources; Equal Opportunity, Compliance and Conflict Management; Housing and Residence Life; and the Undergraduate Student Government Association.

National Hazing Prevention Week events will give students meaningful opportunities to explore the issue of hazing through interactive tabling, live theater, and a film screening. Students will also have the chance to take a pledge to stand against hazing.

Hazing can take many forms and occur in unexpected contexts, but students are uniquely positioned to recognize, reject, and report it — especially when they feel safe, supported, and empowered to do so. Georgia Tech is committed to preventing hazing, as it can negatively impact emotional, social, and physical wellness.

OSI is ensuring that the anti-hazing message continues beyond National Hazing Prevention Week. Throughout the week, members of Greek life and registered student organizations will decorate honeycomb tiles with personalized anti-hazing statements. These tiles will come together in a striking Honeycomb Against Hazing mosaic, which will be displayed in the John Lewis Student Center as a lasting symbol of student commitment to a safer campus culture.

Buzz will be on hand at each event to be photographed with students who are taking the pledge, and these photos will then be digitally combined into one large #SwarmAgainstHazing banner demonstrating the community’s commitment to hazing prevention.

Organized by the Hazing Prevention Network, a non-profit organization, National Hazing Prevention Week is a time when communities, institutions, organizations, and individuals across the country make a concerted effort to raise awareness and increase education about hazing.  Visit the HPN website to learn more about the organization.
